The origin of the present City of Grosse Pointe Park dates back to 1848 when the Township of Grosse Pointe was separated from Hamtramck Township. At that time Grosse Pointe included everything east of Waterworks Park on Jefferson Avenue. This area was primarily farmland, although a steam railroad was extended through the Township in 1887. During the "Gay Nineties" the area became known as Detroit's foremost summer resort and there were many roadhouses boasting fine foods. In 1907 the Village of Fairview was annexed by the City of Detroit and this act expanded the Detroit boundary eastward from the Waterworks to 200 feet east of Alter Road. The area east of Alter to Cadieux was then known as the Cottage Grove Post Office.
To Protect against the ever-expanding Detroit boundaries, the citizens in the Cottage Grove area incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe Park. Elections were set for May 1907, and nominations for office were made at a mass meeting held inside the old Trombly School House, located on the south side of Jefferson Avenue between Beaconsfield and Nottingham Avenues. The actual election was held in an old shanty at the rear of the school. In 1910 the first census was taken and showed a population of 290 persons.
On December 11,1950, the Village was incorporated as the City of Grosse Pointe Park. Population was slightly over 13,000 with more than 3,300 dwellings and 130 businesses.
Grosse Pointe Park covers 2.21 square miles; the Park's boundaries extend from Mack Avenue to Lake St. Clair and from Cadieux to the roadway between Wayburn and Alter Road.
